Nature-Deficiency and our Youth

Did you know that according to studies U.S. children spend three times the hours in front of screens then playing outdoors?  And according to one survey taken 50% of children spend less than an hour a day outside.  When I was a child we were always outside.  There is evidence now that it is actually really good for you to spend time in nature, both physically and mentally.

There is a new phenomenon known as "nature deficit disorder" and it is leading to many physical and mental problems in children and young adults.  This phenomenon is due the the rise in urbanized lifestyles that include few natural spaces, little time outdoors, too much screen time and increased pressure from school and work leading to more time indoors.  It is said that less exposure to nature has been paralleled to an increase in mental health disorders, feelings of sadness and hopelessness and suicidal thoughts.  And if you have been paying attention, mental disorders and suicide in our youth is on the rise.

Exposure to nature improves cognitive functioning, decreases attention deficit disorder and promotes self-awareness on top of many other great benefits.  Just think about how you feel taking a stroll, feeling the fresh breeze through your hair and the sun beating down on you.  When you notice the beauty of the trees, the birds or other wild life... it is so invigorating and you just become happier.

Just like getting adjusted to keep your nervous system healthy, nature is good for you.. good for our youth!  I strongly encourage paying attention and being sure you and your family remember to spend time in nature to help boost your mental health and your immune system.
